PRF (Platelet Rich Fibrin)

PRF is made from a small sample of your own blood, spun gently so nothing is added and nothing is wasted. We use it for facial rejuvenation, under-eye hollows and hair restoration.

What Is PRF

A blood sample being prepared for PRF at Renewed Health and Wellness in Prospect, Connecticut

PRF stands for platelet rich fibrin. We draw a small sample of your blood, the same way a routine lab draw is done, and spin it in a centrifuge at a low speed. What separates out is a layer rich in platelets, white blood cells, stem cells and a natural fibrin scaffold. We then use that layer as the treatment.

The word that matters here is fibrin. Because the spin is slower and no anticoagulant is added, the platelets stay caught in a soft fibrin mesh instead of being released all at once. That mesh sits in the tissue and releases growth factors gradually over the days that follow, rather than in a single burst. It is your own biology doing the work, with nothing synthetic involved.

We use PRF on the face to support collagen and skin quality, under the eyes where the skin is thin and hollowing shows, and on the scalp as part of a hair restoration plan. It is often delivered by injection, by microneedling, or by both in the same visit depending on what we are treating.

Why Patients Come To Us

4 Reasons People Choose PRF

01

It comes entirely from you

Nothing is added to your sample. No anticoagulant, no additives, no synthetic filler material. For patients who want a regenerative option with the shortest possible ingredient list, PRF is it.

02

A slower, longer release

The fibrin matrix holds the platelets and lets growth factors release over days instead of minutes. That extended signal is the main reason we often choose PRF over PRP for delicate work.

03

Well suited to the under-eye area

The skin under the eyes is thin and unforgiving. PRF is a softer, more gradual option there than many alternatives, which is why we keep under-eye treatment on our facial rejuvenation plans.

04

Works for both skin and hair

The same visit can address facial skin quality and scalp health. We often treat both when hair thinning and skin changes are showing up at the same stage of life.

How It Works

What Happens During Your Visit

01

We confirm you are a candidate

We review your health history, your medications and anything that affects clotting or healing. PRF depends on your own blood, so that conversation comes first.

02

We draw a small sample

It is a standard blood draw from the arm and it takes a couple of minutes.

03

We spin it gently

The sample goes into the centrifuge at a low speed with no additives. This is what preserves the fibrin matrix.

04

We numb the treatment area

Topical numbing goes on while the sample is spinning, so the timing works out and nothing is rushed.

05

We treat

Depending on your plan, the PRF is injected, delivered through microneedling, or both. Under-eye treatment is always injected and always done slowly.

06

We review aftercare and set the series

You will have written aftercare before you leave, and a plan for how many sessions we expect and how far apart.

Choosing Between Them

PRF Compared To PRP

PRP and PRF both start with your blood and both concentrate your platelets. The difference is how fast the sample is spun and what is added to it, and that changes how the treatment behaves once it is in the tissue.

Neither one is universally better. We pick based on what we are treating, how your skin behaves and what you want out of the series.

PRF being injected during a facial treatment at Renewed Health and Wellness in Prospect, Connecticut
01 PRP is spun at a higher speed and usually involves an anticoagulant. The result is a concentrated liquid that releases growth factors quickly.
02 PRF is spun slower with nothing added, which leaves a fibrin scaffold that releases growth factors gradually over several days.
03 PRF contains white blood cells and stem cells that a standard PRP preparation largely spins out.
04 PRP has the longer research history, particularly for hair restoration, and remains an excellent choice for many of our patients.
05 PRF is often our preference for the under-eye area and for patients who want nothing added to their sample.

Questions Patients Ask

Frequently Asked Questions

What does PRF stand for?

Platelet rich fibrin. It is a concentrate made from a small sample of your own blood, spun slowly so the platelets stay held in a natural fibrin matrix.

How is PRF different from PRP?

PRF is spun at a lower speed with no anticoagulant, which preserves a fibrin scaffold and releases growth factors gradually over days. PRP is spun faster and releases more quickly.

Does PRF hurt?

The blood draw feels like any routine lab draw. We numb the treatment area before we begin, and most people tolerate the treatment well.

Can PRF help with under-eye hollows and dark circles?

It is one of the treatments we use there. Results vary with the cause of the hollowing and with your anatomy, and we will tell you honestly at your consultation whether we think you will see a meaningful change.

Does PRF help with hair loss?

PRF is used on the scalp to support circulation and the follicles that are still active. It works best earlier in the process, and it is usually part of a plan rather than a standalone fix.

How many treatments will I need?

Most people do a series spaced several weeks apart, then maintenance. The exact number depends on the area and on how you respond.

Is there downtime after PRF?

Expect some swelling, redness or bruising for a few days, especially with injections under the eyes. We will tell you what to expect for your specific treatment before you book.
